Gmail and Yahoo Require a Phone Number for New Accounts

    source - http://www.ndtv.com/article/world/gm...ail-ids-573716

I found this on google, don't know if it's just in India or the whole world because the article only refers to people in India. It looks like Gmail and Yahoo are now going to require a phone number as mandatory when creating a new account. I don't like this and wont be making any new accounts with, or refer either of the two email services to others if this is true.

That's lame. What about people who can't afford a phone line?

Universities also set up mass numbers of accounts using Gmail too. It makes me wonder if they'll be able to bypass that.

I think that when the number of people subscribing/signing up to the service drops they may rethink their strategy. I used to log into google everyday when I had iGoogle as a homepage, ever since iGoogle was dropped I barely log into google, maybe once in a while to check my email. I think the N-S-A did some arm twisting to get google to implement this.

It's an anti-spam check, i think being a university account will bypass the need for that.
