    Getting around NTFS permissions

I repair computers, which means I often have to take out hard drives and access the files on my own computer. Unfortunately, NTFS is a complete PITA because, if I want to access any of the personal files, it has to go through every single folder and file, and adding full permissions. That means waiting up to an hour.

I know it's possible to get around permissions since a lot of software does it, but I can't find a way for the administrator to do it? I was hoping someone here can help.

Are you adding it as a second drive and running into permission issues? I can't say that I've ever had issues with that. Try building a Linux virtual machine or use a version that boots from DVD.

I'm using them as external drives. I got a dock about a year ago that's made it easier.

The higher level of security doesn't exist on other file systems. Anyway, next time I work on someone's drive (probably Monday), I'll test that out.

PS: It's nice to see you again

Several days later but yeah I've run into this exact situation. I made my internal an external when i got a high end laptop (Ebay) at tax time. I was going to delete /Windows to save room that i wasn't using. Even googling and doing what was suggested netted me bupkis.

I tried adding it to a virtual Linux machine, but it wouldn't mount.
